Raúl Melo, tenor
Born in Havana, Cuba, and a citizen of the United States, Mr. Melo is a resident of the state of Maryland. He has a large and varied repertoire which he has performed in the U.S. and abroad, at such theaters as Berlin's Deutsche Oper and State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Stuttgart's State opera, Düsseldorf's Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Frankfurt Opera, Dresden State Opera and in the United States at The Washington Opera, Detroit Opera, Cleveland Opera, Florida Grand, Palm Beach Opera, Minnesota Opera, Des Moines Opera, New York City Opera, Connecticut Opera, and Tri-Cities Opera, a.o.
The roles he has performed most often are the Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto, Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème, Nemorino in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore and the Singer in Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier,. Mr.Melo has also performed the main tenor roles in Gounod's Faust, Bizet's Carmen, Puccini's Madama Butterfly and Tosca, Verdi's La Traviata, Strauss' Die Fledermaus, Delibes' Lakmé, Verdi's Macbetto and Lehar's The Merry Widow.
During the 2002-2003 season, Mr. Melo can be heard as Rodolfo in La Boheme and in Rossini's Stabat Mater with the Macao (China) Opera, as Alfredo in La Traviata with Nashville Opera and as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Connecticut Opera. His concert engagements include performances of operatic arias with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Grand Rapids and Monterey Symphonies, as well as Verdi's Requiem with Virginia and South Bend Symphonies.
Recently, Mr. Melo made his debut with Seattle Opera in the role of Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera and also debuted with the Zurich State Opera as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor. He also created the role of Manno Bianchini in a world premiere opera titled Sacco and Vanzetti written by Anton Coppola for the opera in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Melo has performed several concerts with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Verdi Requiem with San Antonio Symphony, as Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera with the Palm Beach Opera. Season 2000/01 included for Mr. Melo the role of Rodolfo in La Bohème with Connecticut Opera, Alfred in Die Fledermaus with the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and Pollione in Norma with the Fort Worth Opera.
Mr. Melo, won the prize of "Best Lyric Tenor" in the 1992 Alfredo Kraus Competition.
